We have stayed in Bangkok several times, both as a staging post and as a destination in itself.  I have typically chosen family hotel by checking reviews for facilities relative to budget. But we have also come to realise that there is this thing called location.  Also, my checklist of facilities may not be the same as everyone else’s.

So to supplement my own experience, I have invited a few other travellers to contribute. They have shared reviews of their personal favourite family hotel to make this article as useful as possible. First, though, a few paragraphs about locations and facilities.

Districts in Bangkok – where to stay in Bangkok

Here are the main tourist districts discussed by fellow bloggers on the internet. And again I have asked contributors to specify the district where their recommendations are located.  Note that these do not correspond with the 50 formal districts (Khet) you will find listed in Wikipedia or shown on Google Maps. But they seem to be well-known to everyone else.

Riverside

Location: Along the river, (both sides)

Character:  Riverside is the most picturesque and historic area, also the most expensive.

landmark bangkok, places to see in bangkok, seen bangkok, visit bangkok, must do in bangkok, things to do in bangkok thailand, places of interest in bangkok, things to do in bangkok with kids, bangkok activities, places in bangkok

Pros and Cons:  Beautiful views, Glittering temples, publicly-accessible rooftop gardens (with restaurants and bars), and evening walks.  Many of the hotels here have river-boat shuttles linking with Central Pier from where you can get to the BTS/Skytrain and other ferries.  There is no MRT in this area but plenty of taxis of course.

Khaosan

Location: Between Siam and the Riverside, and north of Chinatown

Character:  Khaosan is an intense area of tiny stalls, eateries, and backpackers’ hostels.  It is also party-land.

Pros and Cons:  Fun, full of colour and life.  Plenty of cheap hostel accommodation and close to the riverside and within a short taxi ride of Siam district.  A block away is Rambuttri, which shows a prettier greener side of traditional Bangkok. Note that Khao San Road itself is noisy, so stay off the main drag if you want some sleep.

Siam

Location: Central Shopping District

Character:  Siam district is defined by the Siam BTS/Skytrain Station and Siam Paragon Mall.  And then there are several other large modern malls all around, within easy walking distance.

things to do in Bangkok with children, top 10 bangkok, bangkok with kids, bangkok top attractions, somerset lake point bangkok, places to visit in bangkok with family, places to visit in bangkok at night, what to do in bangkok at night, what to do in bangkok thailand, bangkok family hotel, places to visit near bangkok

Pros and Cons:  Good for big modern malls, and inside them are many of the cosmopolitan family attractions where we spent a good proportion of our time.  Jim Thompson House is also nearby. Although there are small restaurants in this district, you will find the best authentic Thai food in the big mall food courts.

Sukhumvit

Location: East of the centre and defined by the Sukhumvit Road and its side streets (Soi)

Character:  Sukhumvit is cool modern and centred about nightlife and restaurant culture.

places near bangkok, kids activities in bangkok, 10 things to do in bangkok, what to visit in bangkok, places to visit in bangkok thailand, attractions in bangkok thailand, bangkok best places to visit, what to do in bangkok for 3 days, bangkok destination, bangkok things to see

Pros and Cons:  Good for shopping, supermarkets, and access to both MRT and BTS/SkyTrain.  Dinosaur Planet Theme Park is here, but little in the way of traditional attractions. There are some noisy clubbing and also red light areas, but the place is generally family-friendly.

Airport

Location: Around the two Airports

Character:  Nothing

Pros and Cons: Good for fast access to the airport.

Our list of Facilities for Perfect Family-friendly Accommodation in Bangkok

Food Preparation

Second up: food.  Both girls have food intolerances, and I like to be able to prepare meals and picnics either in the room or in a hostel kitchen.  We aren’t talking roasting, baking and cordon bleu here. I will be washing and chopping vegetables, preparing scrambled eggs and porridge.  Occasionally I may be frying breakfast or making soup.

Swimming pool and Kids’ Facilities

The third and most important thing from a kids point of view is the swimming pool. Bangkok can get very hot and stuffy and the possibility of jumping to the pool after a day of exploring Bangkok with kids makes all the difference.

Nice-to-Haves – clothes washing, wifi etc . . .

And for good measure more at the nice-to-have level.  We need clothes washing and drying every few days, not every night. This can be anything from a machine with a spin dryer to a clothesline over the bath.  Wifi is also nice-to-have only. Mobile data is cheap in Thailand, buy a SIM card at the airport on arrival.

These facilities are available at any price-point.  Strangely, hostels and low-cost hotels often tick more boxes for me than swish top-of-the-range hotels, though I enjoy both.

Why not pause now and write down your own checklist of requirements?  With this in mind, I have asked my contributors to discuss facilities, since perhaps your list is different from mine.

Luxury Family Accommodation in Bangkok

137 Pillars Residences Bangkok

137 Pillars BKK is one of the few family hotel with a rooftop pool that has a clear view of the city. It is located in the trendy district of Sukhumvit and has great facilities for everyone in the family. There are two pools located in the upper section of the hotel, and at the regular pool, you can also walk on a glass floor that lets you look down 37 floors.

I love everything about this family hotel, the interior, food, the staff, and the suites. Of course, the chillout area on the top floor and rooftop pool is the highlight, but if you’re looking for a luxurious hotel in Bangkok, look no further than 137 Pillars. Check prices of 137 Pillars Residence

Hotel Mövenpick Hotel Bangkok

As classy as you would expect from the brand, and offering family rooms as well as all normal 5-star facilities.  The Movenpick interior design is a little quirky and boutiquey which differentiates it from standard five stars. Nice friendly professional staff too.

The Movenpick family hotel is an easy walk from both BTS/Skytrain and MRT/Subway stations and reasonably priced for its class.  It has a kids pool and childminding services, but no food preparation facilities in the rooms

The hotel and a hostel located opposite have a laundry facility which is very useful if you have a sackful of road-weary clothes as we had last time we stayed there.

Shama Lakeview Asoke Hotel

Location:  Sukhumvit

With its spacious and self-contained studios and apartments, the Shama Lakeview Asoke family hotel is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a family-friendly hotel while in Bangkok.

There are several room types here, including a studio room as well as two and three-bedroom apartments.  A small family of three can easily be accommodated in a studio room, while larger families of up to 6 people can stay in the apartments.  All rooms include a kitchen (studios are just basic kitchenettes, while the apartments are fully equipped kitchens) and a washer/dryer which are ideal amenities for families.

This family hotel includes a massive rooftop swimming pools which have views across the Bangkok city skyline, and there is also a large fitness centre too.  In the lobby, you will find the Coffee Club as well as a convenience store right outside.

Ibis Styles Bangkok Khaosan Viengtai

Location: Rambuttri close to Khaosan

The Ibis Styles is ideally situated not on Khaosan itself but Rambuttri which means you get all the fun and adventure of being close to backpacker-land with its stalls and colour but without the noise.

It has family rooms with some great double-level colourful sleeping platforms.  Our kids always love any quirky beds especially double height ones and these are no exception.  Whilst there isn’t exactly a kitchenette in the rooms, some have a kind of big washstand outside the bathroom which can double as a place for simple picnic preparation.

The Styles in the name seems to refer to a very colourful modern and fresh decor which we loved.  There is also an outdoor pool and the buffet breakfast was great for a mid-range hotel. We have been to Ibises in other towns and found them rather sterile but this one is fresh and lively and its location excellent within an easy walk to both Khaosan and the riverside but too far to walk to Siam.

Talking of location, there is also an Ibis in Siam area.  We haven’t been there because it doesn’t seem like a family hotel.

Ibis Bangkok Riverside

Location: Riverside

There is also another family hotel Ibis with family rooms on the west bank a ten-minute walk from the MTS/Skytrain.  This one is more modern classic monochrome in style, with a pool lawn.

The Adelphi Suites Bangkok

The Adelphi Suites Bangkok is located in bustling Sukhumvit, just a minute’s walk from Nana BST station, making it easy to travel around the city. It’s also very well located for food and shopping, with lots in all price brackets. A all-suites hotel is a great option for families and any travellers looking for extra space and facilities. We topped and tailed our three weeks in Thailand with a few nights in Bangkok, and this was definitely one of the most spacious and comfortable accommodations we enjoyed

Our apartment had a comfortable bedroom and bathroom, and a spacious living room with kitchenette. We appreciated having a fridge and laundry facilities in our own space, much easier than using shared laundry facilities where you need to wait or be back for when the wash or dry finishes, and the hotel included a decent breakfast buffet in the rate, served in their restaurant and bar. This family hotel also has a small open-air pool, and the front desk, which is manned 24 hours a day, can help with shopping and restaurant recommendations, booking sightseeing tours and even arranging babysitting.

Old Capital Bike Inn

Location: on the edge between Khaosan and Siam Districts

The Old Capital Bike Inn is a boutique hotel right in the heart of everything. You can walk to the Grand Palace or Khao San Road, but they offer so much more than location. The Inn is super cute, and bike-themed from floor to ceiling. Murals and photographs adorn all the walls. Even the chandeliers are made from artistically repurposed bike parts. Of course, a true bike enthusiast wants to ride; that’s why they offer complimentary night tours four nights a week.

Even if you’re not a rider, you’ll love their personalized service. Their concierge hooked us up with hidden gem eateries we would never have found on our own. Their on-premise cafe offers complimentary breakfast, and delicious lattes all day long.  The rooms were spacious and comfortable and, of course, they all offered air conditioning. They even have family suites big enough for the entire family. The boutique nature of the Old Capital Bike Inn made us feel more like house guests than tourists.

Low-cost Family Accommodation in Bangkok

The hostel is in the perfect location for foodies – in the middle of Bangkok’s Chinatown. There are a few massages parlours nearby too where you can have a foot massage after a long day of walking.

Even though Norn Yaowarat is a hostel it has a family room with a private bathroom. Other options if you are travelling as a big family is to rent one of the dorm rooms.
